Nickelodeon Animation Studio

One of the most fun projects I’ve worked on at Struck was a pair of totem poles made up of classic Nickelodeon characters that are now installed at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, CA.

Starting with a rough sketch and dimensions of the sculptures, I planned out which characters should go where and explored a range of styles and treatments to fit the totem pole look—from more to less abstract. I ended up landing somewhere in the middle—the colors and features stayed true to the original characters, but their head and body shapes became more blocky and graphic.

We worked with a very talented team of local fabricators to create the sculptures. They took the 2D designs I created and rendered them into the 3D realm with high-density foam coated in a weather-safe enamel lacquer. I made a couple trips to the shop to give direction on some of the areas that were tricky to translate from 2D to 3D.
